Social Media is a type of media that is different from all other media (print, electronic and parallel media). Social media creates a virtual world through the Internet which a user can access using any social media platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) etc.

In today's era, social media has become an important part of life, which has many features, such as providing information, entertaining and educating.

What is social media?

Social media is a nontraditional media. This creates a virtual world that can be accessed through the Internet. Social media is a huge network, which keeps the whole world connected. It is a very good medium of communication. It consists of exchanging information at a rapid pace, which contains news from every field.

Social media plays a positive role by which any person, institution, group and country etc. can be made economically, socially, culturally and politically prosperous. Through social media, there have been many developmental works that have enriched democracy, which has increased the unity, integrity, secularism, socialist qualities of any country.

We see many examples that corroborate the above, in which one can see 'INDIA AGAINST CORRUPTION', which was a campaign against corruption which was fought on the streets as well as on social media, due to which the huge crowd Anna Connected with Hazare's movement and made it influential.

During the 2014 general election, political parties played an important role in making the general public aware of the election using fierce social media. The use of social media in this general election increased the voting percentage, as well as increased awareness among the youth about the election. A large number of youths took to the streets to bring justice to 'Nirbhaya' through social media, forcing the government to enact a new and more effective law under pressure.

Social media is a great platform for spreading popularity, where a person can make himself or any of his products more popular. Today, the trailer of movies, TV programs are also being broadcast through social media. Video and audio chat have also been facilitated through social media, with Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram being some of the major platforms.

We have seen an explosion of information and content in the last few years and we cannot deny the power of social media. Social media can be widely used to create important causes and awareness in society. Social media can also help in many great works run by NGOs and other social welfare committees. Social media can help other agencies and government in spreading awareness and fighting crime. Social media can be used as a strong tool for promotion and sales in many businesses. Many communities are formed through social media platforms which are necessary for the development of our society.

Disadvantages of social media

Social media is nowadays considered to be one of the most harmful effects in our life, and using it wrongly can lead to bad results. There are many other disadvantages of social media such as:

1. Cyberbullying: Many children have become victims of cyberbullying due to which they have suffered a lot.

2. Hacking: Loss of personal data that can cause security problems and crimes like identity and bank details theft, which can harm any person.

3. Bad Habits: Prolonged use of social media can cause addiction among youth. Due to bad habits,    important things like study etc. can be lost. People get affected by this and get separated from society and damage their personal life.

4. Scams: Many hunters are looking for vulnerable users so that they can scam and make  profit from them.

5. Relationship fraud: Honeytraps and pornographic MMS are the most common cause of online fraud. People are deceived by being implicated in such false lovemaking.

6. Health Issues: Excessive use of social media can affect your physical and mental health in a big way. Often people experience laziness, fat, eye irritation and itching, loss of vision and stress etc.        after its excessive use.

7. Loss of social and family life: Due to excessive use of social media, people get away from family and society in devices such as phones.

There are millions of people worldwide who use social media daily. A mixed mention is given of its positive and negative aspects. There are many things in it that are important in helping us, so there are some things that can harm us. Thus social media has both advantages and disadvantages it just requires our conscience to deal with it.
