    Why do we celebrate the day of Oil Lamps?


    According to the  hindu calendar, Diwali is  observed on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu calendar. In Hindu mythology it is believed that Lord Rama Returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of intense meditation in forests after killing Ravan in Lanka who kidnapped his wife Goddess Sita. When Lord Ram returned back to Ayodhya he was welcomed with the oil lit clay lamps.

    Diwali is a festival of a symbolic representation of victory over Adharma, it is a festival which tells us to be good over evil. Diwali celebrants wear new clothes, light oil lamps and crackers to show light over darkness. On the day of celebration, people worship Lakshmi the goddess of wealth. Celebration involves exchanging gifts and love.

     


    Special preparation for diwali


    In India  preparations for Diwali starts in the homes weeks in advance. Houses are cleaned and nicely painted. All waste items are thrown away. Every corner of the house is cleaned. Seeing all this it is not wrong to say that Diwali is a festival of cleanliness.



    How this significant day is celebrated


    On this auspicious day, everyone decorates their houses with various decorations, people light up their houses and rooftops with the help of many lamps, worship goddess Lakshmi and light firecrackers and flames. Rangoli is made by women in the courtyard of the house. In the evening, people visit their relatives’  houses with gifts  and sweets.

    Why Diwali is not just a festival but a series of festivals


    The other main festivals associated with Diwali give it the shape of a series of festivals. It starts with Dhanteras of Karthik Triodash. The next day, Narak Chaturdashi i.e. Chhoti Diwali then on the fourth day celebrates Lakshmi Pujan , Govardhan Puja on the next day finally Bhai Dooj is celebrated which is a day to celebrate the bond of brother and sisters
